Would You Let AI Make Your Book Cover?

I've been thinking a lot about AI lately and what it means to me as an author. I've been trying to make a book cover for my new web novel this week and I didn't realize you could just describe what you want it to look like to ChatGPT and it would create one for you out of thin air. I've never used ChatGPT so I wouldn't know how to do that, but I've been asking myself if that feels right to me.

I was a graphic designer before I was a writer. I've watched the design trends since before independently published books were a thing. Not only do I want the rights to the images I create, I want it to be uniquely mine. I made nearly all the book covers I use and even if they aren't all great, they're uniquely mine, because they were made my me.

I'm starting to think that it's one thing to use AI tools to help you change something about an image and it's another when you simply tell the computer to come up with something. I mean, where are they drawing these images from? Where are they getting the fonts? But most of all, I don't think I would feel like it was mine. Maybe people who didn't study design wouldn't mind that at all, but I don't think it's right for me.

I’m still not against taking an image you’ve purchased commercial rights to use and running it through AI to change something in the background or in the case of Amish fiction where not nearly enough stock photos exist, putting a bonnet on someone’s head. And I can’t imagine how hard it must be for sci-fi and fantasy authors to cover their work without hiring an artist to make the drawings specifically for them, so I’m not judging anyone for using AI. But for me, I’m going to try to avoid it as much as I can and keep it as a tool I use, rather than a replacement for my hard work.

What are your thoughts? Would you let AI build your cover without giving it any images to work with?
