Urgent vs. Important

This week I'm learning lessons that I've learned before and forgotten. Mainly the difference between things that are important verses things that are urgent. Urgent things will get done. They have to. You must do the dishes eventually or you'll run out. Same with clothes. At some point you'll be forced to stop everything and just do it. But important tasks are more easily forgotten. Reading your Bible, writing your novel.

No one is going to force you and you may not see the consequences of neglecting important tasks until it's too late and so much time has passed that real damage has been done. Sometimes it feels wrong to neglect the urgent in favor of the important, but in the end the reward will be worth it.

Luke 10:38-42 KJV

38 Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house.

39 And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word.

40 But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me.

41 And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things:

42 But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.

Martha was concerned about urgent things. Mary was interested in important things. If you can do both, what a blessing! If you can do only one, make it important. Urgent things will make time for themselves.
